Did you know we have a Mini Switzerland in India?

The beautiful crown of India, Kashmir is popularly known as the mini Switzerland in India. This is largely due to the snow clad mountains, pine trees, the pleasant weather all year round and abundance of mountains, lakes, landscapes, gardens and valleys. If we only look at the pictures without any people in it, it would be tough to distinguish between the two.

Top Places to Visit in Kashmir

1) Gulmarg

The gondola ride is a must-do activity in Gulmarg. Do not miss the Seven Springs at the end of the ride in Kongdori. Except for September, this ‘Meadow of Flowers’ destination can be visited any time of the year. The winter months are ideal for skiing and snowboarding from Apharwat Peak. The Apharwat Lake is a lovely finale to a beautiful natural trail. Camping and fishing is possible at Ningle and Ferozepur Nallah, the two mountain streams. Do not forget to tee on the highest green golf course in the world at Gulmarg.

2) Srinagar

The Dal lake, Nisheen lake and Wular lake are all ideal for floating markets and shikara rides. Betaab valley with all green carpet-like cover with rivulets and streams breaking the landscape and Aru valley with its snowcapped peaks and tall pines are a technicolor treat for eyes. The ruins of Awantipora, Hazratbal mosque, Shankaracharya temple and Mughal gardens are some other interesting spots. Ensure these are included in your Kashmir tour packages.

3) Sonamarg

Gulmarg may be the meadow of flowers but Sonamarg, as the name suggests, is the meadow of gold. Look no further than this for a road-trip. Take the Gangabal trek, go for a short rafting from ball to Shuktari bridge, visit the awe-inspiring Thajiwas glacier, Vihansar and Krishnasar lakes. Sonamarg is trekker’s paradise. The ‘great lakes of Kashmir’ trek begins from here. The Nilagrad river here is rumored to have healing powers.

4) Pahalgam

Popular for the daunting and spiritual Amarnath yatra, Pahalgam is close to Aru and Betaab valleys and is drained by the Lidder river. Water rafting enthusiasts are in for an adventure on this river. Pahalgam also has its own mini Switzerland in Baisaran which can be accessed only on foot beyond a point. It also has its own golf course, lakes such as Sheshnag, Marsar, Tulian and the beautiful Kolahoi glacier. The Amarnath Yatra puts Pahalgam on the list of many India tour packages.

5) Other than these four major destinations, do not forget bikers’ favorite Leh with its alpine lakes and lofty mountains, the small village of Hemis known for its national park and monastery, Pulwama for its saffron fields and the goosebumps-giving Kargil for its stoic beauty and history.
